Sharetops provides a web desktop based interface between the user and the web that can be accessed from different locations and across different operating systems and web browsers. Users can create links across desktops that point to almost any web resource on the web, such as web pages, images / uploaded photographs, videos, audio, RSS feeds and so forth. To open up a resource, it's a simple case of double clicking the desktop icon that represents the resource on the web; compatible resources will be opened up inside the desktop allowing the user to move them around and resize them. Sharetops provides a built in web search feature that allows users to search for images, videos, websites and RSS feeds that they can add directly to their desktops. In addition, the Sharetops web site offers a small but growing user created web directory that all web users have access to. Sharetops encourages users to share their desktops with other web users by publishing them to the Sharetops database, where web users can search and browse for items of interest; any public resources can be examined by visitors or even copied by fellow Sharetop users. Users can also manage and chat with friends, exchange links to resources, build favourites, create to do lists and reminder lists. Sharetops offers a deep level of customisation to its users by allowing them to change many aspects of Sharetops as well as how their web resources will look and operate. For example, users can move their resources around the desktop to organise them into spatial groups or even completely replace the icons themselves. As another example, users can set an image or video as their background wallpaper or as the background to a text document or RSS feed. The deep level of customisation that Sharetops provides enables users to create themed / branded fully navigable desktop based web sites that incorporate customisable text, video, music, images, RSS feeds and custom widget applications and games. Sharetops provides a plug-in architecture that allows users to extend their desktop functionality by adding user created games and applications. A developer API is also supplied that allows plug-in developers to utilise Sharetops data directly in their applications, opening up the door to multi-user distributed applications and games.
